The He-Man and the Masters of the Universe franchise first began in 1982 with the release of the toy line. Shortly after that, the animated series came out in 1983 and lasted until 1985. Along with these two for the franchise, The New Adventures of He-Man series released in 1990. Then, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe 2002 reboot series came out. The start of this franchise hit immediate popularity and centered around an epic action-packed story. The franchise revolves around the story of He-Man, the heroic alter ego of Prince Adam, who has conflict with the evil Skeletor. As Skeletor seeks to rule the planet Eternia, He-Man defends the planet and the secrets of Castle Grayskull. In recent years, these characters and storyline appears once again through the resurgence of He-Man MotU.
New television shows, comic books, action figures, and movie all take part in this resurgence of He-Man MotU. Many people come back to these new releases for the franchise with nostalgia of the original shows and toys. Along with this, many new fans come into the love of the franchise through these new releases. The three series include He-Man and the Masters of the Universe (2021), Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021), and Masters of the Universe: Revolution (2024). These series bring the heroic and evil characters of the past back for more epic adventures. While the Masters of the Universe: Revelation series acts as a reboot to the 1983 series, the others act as sequels. These feature both the original storyline from the series and a reimagining of the series through new stories.
He-Man and The Masters of the Universe (2021)
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe take a spot on this recent resurgence of He-Man MotU blog. This series released on September 16, 2021 and includes 3 seasons of 26 episodes. Rob David created and produced this children’s animated action fantasy series for Netflix. Yuri Lowenthal, David Kaye, Antony Del Rio, Kimberly Brooks, Grey Griffin, Tom Kenny, Roger Craig Smith, Judy Alice Lee, Benjamin Diskin, and Trevor Devall all voice acted in this series. This series takes a reboot of the 1983 series. It features a new and adventurous story beginning with a young lost prince. This prince, located on the planet Eternia, learns of the powers of Grayskull and transforms into He-Man. Battles between He-Man and Skeletor take place as they form new powerful teams to help them fight to become the Master of the Universe.
Masters of the Universe: Revelation (2021)
The 2021 MotU: Revelation series announced as the direct sequel to the original 1983 television series. The First Part released worldwide on July 23 while The Second Part released on November 23 of the same year. Both seasons included 5 episodes created and executive produced by Kevin Smith. The adventure fantasy animated series released on Netflix with each episode lasting 24-27 minutes long. This direct sequel of the original series also features the same loved characters. This includes the heroes, He-Man, Cringer, Man-At-Arms, and Orko. It also includes the evil Skeletor, Beast Man, Evil-Lyn, and the dreadful force of Snake Mountain.
This series features some popular voice actors such as Chris Wood, Lena Headey, Mark Hamill, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Kevin Conroy. Along with these, Liam Cunningham, Stephen Root, Alicia Silverstone, Griffin Newman, Susan Eisenberg, and Alan Oppenheimer all starred in this series. Some of these actors, such as Alan Oppenheimer, also played multiple parts in the original series. The storyline of this series picks up with the final battle that harms Eternia. In order to prevent the destruction of the universe, Teela needs to solve the mystery of the Sword of Power that went missing. This adventure eventually uncovers the long lost truth of Castle Grayskull.
Masters of the Universe: Revolution (2024)
Next up on our blog showing the resurgence of He-Man Motu, we have the 2024 series, Master of the Universe: Revolution. This series released as the sequel to Masters of the Universe: Revelation on Netflix with more action-packed scenes and also lasted a total of 5 episodes. Mattel Television produced it alongside Rob David, Ted Biaselli, Kevin Smith, Christopher Keenan, Frederic Soulie, and Tim Sheridan. Although a lot of the voice actors from the previous series still play their roles in this one, there are some changes. These include new actors such as Melissa Benoist, William Shatner, and Gates McFadden.
This season features the new addition to the MotU story with the battle between technology and magic. Skeletor takes on new mechanized abilities and attacks the heart of Eternia. Meanwhile, Adam makes the impossible decision of choosing between the scepter of the sword, and a life as either a king or a champion. During this time, Teela then begins the search for Snake Magic in the midst of Darksmoke. She keeps the goal in mind to restore a magic realm and help He-Man with the violent threat of Hordak, the ruler of the Horde Empire.
Action Figures
The action figures come next on our blog of the recent resurgence of He-Man MotU. With the original MotU figures releasing first in 1982, these toys sparked the initial popularity for the entire franchise. People all over the world loved playing with these toys and the fandom only grew when the franchise expanded such as the television shows that featured these characters. Then, in more recent years, these popular and iconic toys released in modern versions. One toy line takes the original figures’ appearance while the other toy line released the characters in a larger design with a super detailed modern twist on the appearance.
MotU Origins (2020)
The first of the new toy lines to release, MotU origins, first began in 2020. These figures take the appearance of the original He-Man MotU action figures, revamped. The MotU Origins figures feature more articulation for fun play opportunities and poses. They stand at 5.5 inches tall with a total of sixteen points of articulation. The tag line on the front of the packaging, “modern posing, retro play!”, shows their goal of putting a new twist on the loved original figures. Most of these figures in the Origins line come with new mini comics as well just like the original figures. More than 80 figures, playsets, and vehicles already released for this line of classic new toys.
The first wave of toys includes popular characters such as He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, Prince Adam with his Sky Sled, and Battle Cat. Also in the first wave of toys, the Evil Warriors Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, and Beast Man all released. The packaging on these MotU Origins figures also resembles the original packaging with the bubble and same card back appearance. This line of toys brings the nostalgia and great memories from the He-Man MotU beginnings and takes them to the present day. These toys resonate with past fans and new fans alike. They bring people from multiple generations to enjoy these classic but new action figures, vehicles, and playsets by Mattel.
Mondo 200x (2025)
The next action figures on our resurgence of He-Man MotU, the Mondo 200X MotU toys, take a whole new spin on the classic character appearances. These action figures by Mondo stand at almost 12 inches tall in a 1/6 scale. They stand twice as tall as the original figures and other new He-Man MotU figures. They also feature many points of articulation as well as interchangeable hands, heads, and accessories. This allows for so many incredible posing opportunities. Each figure also features great detail and quality. These Mondo action figures come in at higher prices due to their ability to swap parts, making them completely customizable. Also, they include detailed clothing, weapons, and facial features. Although these figures range from $160-$250 USD, they get their value through all of the well thought out factors.
These figures by Mondo released in 2025. Unlike the other He-Man MotU figures which come in bubble packaging, these come packaged in sleek boxes to match the value of the figures. Since these figures release with high value, their packaging resembles it well. Most come in a black box with an image of the character on the front in a corresponding color. Under the character image, the franchise, Masters of the Universe, takes a spot along with the name of the character. These figures take a new, modern spin to the classic characters as they resemble the 2002 television series.
Comics (2025)
Next up on our blog, we will mention the comic books to release in 2025. These include the Masters of the Universe: Andra comic and Masters of the Universe: The Sword of Flaws comics. Along with these, graphic novels for each of the Netflix television shows also released. Tiffany Smith, the actress of Andra wrote the MotU one-shot comic Masters of the Universe: Andra. The release date, July 23, 2025, brings this new MotU story to fans all over as part of the recent resurgence. This superhero fantasy comic, illustrated by Adriana Melo, tells the story of Andra as she takes on the role as Man-At-Arms.
Then, the Masters of the Universe: The Sword of Flaws four issue miniseries features a story that goes back to the MotU roots. Unlike all other recent releases for the franchise, this miniseries features a story that does not tie into the recent Netflix releases. Written by Tim Seeley and illustrated by Freddie E. Williams II, the first issue of this miniseries releases September 24, 2025. Both the MotU: Revolution and MotU: Revelation graphic novels combine the four comics based off the Netflix series into one epic story. A Legends from Castle Grayskull graphic novel released in 2022, also featuring the same storyline from the Netflix series for fans all over to read.
Masters of the Universe Film (2026)
Now, we have the exciting news of the new animated Masters of the Universe movie to release in 2026. This movie, releasing on Amazon Prime, is directed by Travis Knight and produced by Bill Bannerman, Jason Blumenthal, Todd Black, Robbie Brenner, as well as Steve Tisch. Chris Butler wrote the script for the movie which stars Nicholas Galitzine and Camila Mendes as He-Man and Teela. Along with these two, Idris Elba, Morena Baccarin, Stephen Adentan, Jon Xue Zhang, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, and James Wilkinson all play a role in this new film. James Purefoy, Charlotte Riley, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, Sam C. Wilson, Kojo Attah, Hafthor Bjornsson, Sasheer Zamata, and Christian Vunipola also play roles in this upcoming film.
The plot begins with the character Prince Adam at ten years old as he crashes to Earth in a spaceship. During the crash, Prince Adam loses his magical power sword which links him to his home planet of Eternia. After two whole decades of searching, Prince Adam finds his long lost sword and travels across space back to his home planet to defend it against the evil Skeletor. Through this, Prince Adam becomes He-Man and takes on the role as the most powerful man in the universe. This film brings more of the resurgence of the franchise with its new, revamped original storyline.
Toy Collectors Expansion
The recent resurgence of He-Man MotU also ties into the expansion of toy collections. Many toy collectors keep expanding their collection as they find He-Man MotU toys and figures from the past. Many people remember playing with these toys and seeing the media releases that went along with them. They get nostalgia from seeing the toys and want to get their hands on as many as possible. Their collections begin to grow as their love and appreciation for the toys also grows. Then, with the new action figures and toys for He-Man Masters of the Universe, past fans and collectors can grow to love these toys and add them to their collections.
